Acer palmatum 'Katsura' (Maple)

Description

Common Name:

Japanese Maple.

Description:

A graceful spreading shrub with orange tones in spring.

Size:

3m x 2m

Growing Conditions:

  • Acers require a deeply worked, loamy soil. Condition with compost or garden mix.
  • They are quite hardy but you should shelter from hot drying winds which burn the soft foliage.
  • Tolerant of full sun but the thinner leaved ‘dissectum’ forms and light green coloured forms do best in filtered light.

Care:

  • Pruning from a young age will help develop a pleasing shape.
  • Mulch well to retain moisture. Deeply water during dry.
  • Watch for late frosts which can damage the new growth. Prune off if affected.

Uses:

  • The tree forms are brilliant lawn specimens or as part of a boundary planting.
  • Wonderful features for patio, courtyard and backyards. Autumn tones are stunning.
  • The weeping forms are brilliant beside pools or boulders. Use with Moss and Black Mondo as part of an Oriental design. They will also grow well in big pots.
  • Combine with Hostas, Helleborus or Azalea and low Rhododendron for a shady position.
  • Team up with Hydrangea, Azalea and Rhododendron to under plant larger trees. Combine a variety of forms and colours for an effective display.

Comment:

Often when we mention Maples, people immediately think of the bright purple weeping forms. These are great plants and deserve a pride of place setting but make sure to explore all the other varieties. They are available as miniatures, small and cascading shrubs, weepers as well as small and large trees. The range of foliage colour is also spectacular with fiery oranges, golden yellows and pinks complementing the traditional green and red forms.
