Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula' (Weeping Silver Pear)

Description

 Common Name:

Weeping Silver Pear.

Description:

A silver foliage tree with weeping branches that will touch the ground.

Flower:

Small white flowers cover the tree and are followed by small pear like fruit.

Size:

They will generally grow 1-2m above the graft height, with a spread of 3m.

Growing Conditions:

Does best when planted in full sun in well worked and free draining soil.

Care:

A very hardy tree, needing little attention. It can send out wayward branches making the tree look unruly. Prune these back for size and shape. The occasional application of a general purpose spray will clean up any insect or disease problems.

Uses:

  • An effective tree to lighten a dark background.
  • Suitable for large containers. Looks good in glazed pots, especially blue.
  • A neat focal or specimen tree.
  • Great in the formal garden. Works well with Buxus hedging.

Comments:

Pyrus is mainly grown for its foliage colour and weeping habit. They can be used in many ways in the garden and will happily grow in all but the most exposed spots. Plant them with room to spread their wings, that way they can really make a statement.
