Common Name:
Pineapple Guava.
Description:
A hardy shrub with large green leaves with a silver underside.
Flower:
Large red spidery flowers over the Christmas period. Medium sized, smooth skinned and juicy fruit form around April/ May.
Size:
3m x 2m but trimmable to shape and size.
Growing Conditions:
They will grow in almost all soils but do best in heavy, slightly acidic, well draining soil. They can tolerate moderate salt spray but shelter from the wind is preferable. They can be considered drought tolerate once established but do need good watering during the fruiting period. While they are hardy they can be affected by heavy frost under -5 degrees.
Care:
Feijoa are heavy feeders and love being fed with high Nitrogen based fertiliser in spring. Protect from strong wind to protect flowers and fruit.
Feijoa are rarely bothered by pest or disease but watch for thrips and scale and spray accordingly.
Uses:
· Feijoa makes excellent fruiting hedges.
· Train as a standard to make a neat accent plant.
· Use as a stand alone plant. The flower display is enough reason to plant one.
· Eat fresh, bottle, add to fruit salads or use in baking.
Comment:
Of all the varieties of Feijoa we have grown over the years, this is definitely the best. Truly self fertile, fruits from year one and produces good sized and tasty fruit. Consider planting with Feijoa sellowina if you are creating a hedge. This form is quicker growing and bushier. Plant a ‘Unique’ every few plants and you will have plenty of fruit to pick.
