Griselinia lucida (Akapuka)

Description

Common Name:

Akapuka, Broadleaf.

Description:

Attractive shrub with large glossy green leaves.

Flower:

Tiny flowers are followed by small fleshy fruit.

Size:

4m x 2m, but trimmable.

Growing Conditions:

  • Tolerant of coastal conditions, Griselinia lucida is generally hardy.
  • It is frost tender so protect especially when young.
  • Plant in well draining soil as they don’t like wet feet.

Care:

Trim for size and shape is about all you need to worry about. If they are hit by frost just trim back the damaged growth. They are rarely bothered by pests or disease.

Uses:

  • Often used as a hedge, especially in coastal areas.
  • Makes a neat feature plant in moderngardens.
  • Grow well in containers.

Comment:

Griselinia lucida is actually an epiphyte, naturally growing in forest trees.  The impressive foliage makes it a popular choice for native planting.
