Description:
A hardy evergreen shrub introduced form Japan. It is highly ornamental whether in leaf, bud or flower. A neat compact form with a strong cream edge to the grey leaves.
Flower:
Long panicles of white bell shaped flowers open from pink buds in early spring.
Size:
1m x 1m
Growing Conditions:
They are related to Rhododendron and thrive in similar conditions.
Plant in semi-shade in a deeply worked rich soil.
Likes an acidic soil that is mulched well to insulate the roots.
Care:
Water well during dry periods.
Prune for size and shape. If you feel like it, de head the buds after flowering for appearance.
Like most acidic loving plants they can be prone to Thrips. Spray with a suitable insecticide if an issue.
Uses:
- Plant with Azalea and Rhododendrons for a colourful display.
- Useful for shady, oriental or woodland plantings.
- Plant anywhere a hardy shrub with year round appeal is needed.
Comment:
These neat shrubs would be in the top of our favourites list. Whether in bud or flower they have appeal for long periods of the year. You could even grow them in large pots to put on the patio or deck.
