Common Name:
Autumn Stonecrop
Description:
A neat succulent noted for its striking purple foliage, the flowers are just a bonus. Grows with a compact, clump forming habit.
Flower:
Masses of flower heads are pinky-orange in colour. Attractive to butterflies and bees.
Size:
40cm x 40cm
Growing Conditions:
Plant in full sun with good drainage to achieve the best colour. Shady areas will cause the foliage to fade off in colour. In warmer spots it is evergreen but will die down over winter in colder climates. Will handle most soil types but if it is too rich the growth can become leggy.
Once established they are fairly drought tolerant making a neat xeriscaping option.
Care:
Dead head flowers once finished and prune to retained size and shape. Trim off any wayward or broken branches.
Uses:
· A neat mass plant subject due to the strong colour.
· A contrast plant, especially with silvers, yellows and reds. Think Astelia, Daylilies and Penstemon.
· Great for containers or the traditional perennial garden.
Comment:
This is one of our favourite perennials; such striking foliage makes a fantastic contrast plant. Team up with the golden yellow of Hemerocallis ‘Stella Bella’ or Osteospermum ‘Buttermilk’. The wine red of Heuchera would also lend itself as a companion planting.
