Description

Common Name:

Wild Iris, Fairy Iris

Description:

A clump forming iris with bright green leaves that are held in a fan shape.

Flower:

Tall flower spikes are topped with large white flowers that have yellow basal spots and violet central segments. They are very cool flowers.

Size:

1mx 1m

Growing Conditions:

Dietes is very hardy and is happy in full sun or shade. It is both frost hardy and drought tolerant and is suitable for most soil conditions. It is a South African native that naturally grows on exposed coastal banks.

Care:

The occasional tidy up of any old leaves will keep them looking fresh and clean.

Uses:

  • Really effective mass planted. Especially beside a pond etc.
  • Great for thin gardens, forms a neat edge or border.
  • Works well under-planting trees or shrubs. Useful for woodland plantings.

Comment:

A truly stunning plant that is totally underrated. Consider using it as part of a formal setting. They would look really nice filling out a Box edged garden, and as an under-planting for standard roses. Or imagine a trimmed sasanqua hedge with a row of Dietes and white Hydrangea’s underneath.
