Lavandula angustifolia 'Grosso' (Lavender)

Description

Common Name:

English Lavender

Description:

A classic plant well admired for the masses of flowers and fragrant foliage.

Flower:

Masses of long elongated flower heads are a deep purple.

Size:

40cm x 60cm

Growing Conditions:

They require full sun and a free draining soil. Can cope with rocky and arid soils but need extra feeding and watering.

Care:

·         Lavender are relatively hardy and can handle drought conditions once established but still enjoy a deep watering during dry spells.

·         Trim regularly. This prevents the plant from going woody which is a common problem with Lavender. Once the flowers start to fade trim them back to encourage the next flush of flowers. You can end up doing this 3 or 4 times to extend the flowering season.

Uses:

·         Wonderful as a Lavender hedge. A nice informal and colourful border.

·         Mass plant on a bank or open area.

·         Great filler and mixer for flowering garden.

·         Grow well in containers and make neat topiary subjects trained into standards.

Comment:

Lavandula 'Grosso' has good form and great colour that holds well. It has one of the better oil contents as well, making it a perfect choice for Potpourri. Lavender gets a bad rap for going woody but it is just a case of a couple of light trims each season.
