Pittosporum 'Midget'

Description

Common Name:

‘Midget’

Description:

A small New Zealand native tree with dark green leathery leaves with a distinctive grey underside.

Flower:

Tiny dark crimson - purple flowers from spring through to midsummer.

Size:

70cm x 70cm

Growing Conditions:

Best in dry, free-draining conditions. Plant in full sun to semi shade.

Care:

Little care required. Trim back new growth when young to encourage a strong root system and denser growth at ground level. Can be easily trimmed to desired size.

Pittosporum can be affected by a bug called Psyllid which cause dimple like holes in the leaves. Spray with a suitable insecticide to control. Damaged leaves will either drop off or be covered up by the new growth.

Pittosporum response well to a regular trim rather than a yearly heavy cut back, especially if they are for hedging. This promotes lots of fresh new growth, keeping the shrub dense and bushy and helps stop the hedge from getting ‘leggy’ at the base.

Uses:

  • Makes an attractive and lush low hedge.
  •  A neat feature. A row of ‘Midget’ balls is a tidy and simple solution to a narrow garden.
  • Perfect for containers.

Comments:

Pittosporum ‘Midget’ is a darling of the plant world. Naturally bushy and rounded it is further enhanced with a light trim. This is similar to Pittosporum ‘Golf Ball’ but without the inflated retail price. Be sure to check out Pittopsorum ‘Fankies Folly’ which is our latest addition to the miniature Pittosporum selection.
