Climbers

Bougainvillea glabra
A vigorous climber that does best in a warm, sunny position. In summer it is just a total mass of brilliant magenta coloured flowers. This variety is the most hardy of them and can survive light frosts once established. Just watch out for their thorns.
 
Bougainvillea
This thorny climber from South America does best in warm locations. Free- flowering, the plant is covered in crimson- orange flowers through the summer. Prune hard after flowering as this will promote flower growth for next season.
 
Clematis montana
A rapid growing climber that will cover everything from fences and trellis to stumps and walls. The new growth is red, fading to green with age. The plant is totally cover in four petalled pink flowers for long periods in spring. Prune lightly as required.

Ficus pumila (Creeping Fig)
This hardy, evergreen creeper attaches itself to wall, fences and most surfaces by suckers. Adult stems become thicken and stubby. Fruit appears once mature. A excellent cover for low walls and foundations. A light trim keeps it tidy.
 
Metrosideros carminea
The climbing Rata is related to Pohutukawa. It climbs by clinging to almost most surfaces with aerial roots. The plant is totally covered in reddish flowers over summer. Prefers a cool and moist spot in semi shade it is ideal to cover banks, fences and even tree stumps.
 
Pandorea jasminoides
A hardy, fast growing, evergreen climber. Masses of bright pink, trumpet shaped flowers appear in summer. Prune hard after flowering to retain shape. Does best in full sun.
 
Tecomanthe speciosa
This strong woody climber is from the Three Kings Islands. Large glossy green leaves are very attractive and in spring large panicles of creamy white flowers appear. Thrives in coastal conditions but needs moisture in dry spells. Frost tender.
 
Trachelospermum jasminoides
Known as Star Jasmine this slower growing climber is valued for it's perfumed white star shaped flowers. Best grown in a sunny spot, it can also be used as a groundcover. (Just ask us for hints).
 
Wisteria sinesis
A traditonal climber used for archways and pergolas. A hardy and vigorous deciduous climber which will quickly fill out the required area. Prune to maintain size and encourage flowers. Long panicles of blue flowers cover the climber.
